Emergency Medical Services

Throughout the world the necessity of high quality prehospital emergency care has been recognized. Due to advances in economies, a global trend towards industrialization also causes an “epidemiological transition” of disease patterns. A shift is taking place from infectious diseases towards man-made ones being the leading cause of death, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and injuries, in addition to an increase in environmental hazards due to overpopulation in certain areas. How to best respond to life-threatening emergencies outside of the hospital setting and how to deliver optimal medical care to the patient, as well as how to transport the patient to the most qualified hospital raises questions that no existing medical emergency model worldwide would be able to answer for all countries in the world. Due to economical, cultural, natural, historical, religious, infrastructural and medical differences of all nations, not one of the existing practices for prehospital emergency care can represent the one and only optimal example applicable worldwide. The Von Bergh Global Medical Group proposes an alternative concept how quality care can be provided in a more cost-effective manner.
Von Bergh Global Medical Consulting provides assistance in implementing and improving Emergency Medical Services around the world.
In case of an emergency in the out-of-hospital setting there are two main systems for emergency care in practice throughout the world, the Franco-German System (FGS) and the Anglo-American System (AAS). Mostly in Europe an Emergency Medical Service is found where an emergency physician is sent out with the ambulance to treat emergency patients at the scene. The intensive care unit in brought to the emergency patient.
The USA and Great Britain put a slightly different emergency concept on the way, where paramedics retrieve the patient, giving them minimum treatment while transporting the patients to the hospital emergency room as quick as possible.

You can read the Anglo-American vs. Franco-German Emergency Medical Services System, an article by Dr. Wolfgang F. Dick.

Dr. Martin von Bergh is a practicing Emergency Physician with further qualification as a Disaster Manager. After practicing emergency care in various Emergency Medical Services in the world, he provides international consulting for the establishment and improvement of Emergency Medical Services.
